Guatemala Student Part of GCAA All-Academic Team

2016 Jul 29

The Golf Coaches Association of America announced the annual Team Academic Awards on Wednesday, and the Newberry Wolves were head and shoulders above the pack, earning President's Special Recognition for their sparkling academic record in the 2015-16 season.

Former Guatemala student, Stephan Schutt is a member of the team.

The GCAA Team Academic Award recognizes grades from only the 2015-16 academic year, and the men's golf team at Newberry College posted a 3.503 GPA. The President's Special Recognition is only awarded to teams with a grade point average above 3.5 for the year and Newberry was one of only eight teams in all of Division II to earn this honor.

"The men's golf team had a tremendous year this year, and this award is recognition of one part of that," said Newberry College director of golf and head men's golf coach Howard Vroon. "This group puts their whole heart into their schoolwork and their golf. In addition to finishing the season with two tournament victories, the second lowest stroke average in school history, and a national ranking of 46th, the team understands that their academic work comes first, and this award is a testament to that.

"A team GPA of 3.5, two tournament wins, the third best stroke average in the region, and 14th best stroke average in the country - that is an outstanding season. I am very, very pleased for these student-athletes. They are committed students, outstanding players, and very fine young men. I could not be happier for them to be recognized, and rewarded, in this way."
