Easley Native Honored with Nursing Ribbon in Ceremony

2016 Sep 1

Makaylyn Higgins from Easley, SC was one of 17 senior nursing students at Newberry College who was presented with nursing ribbons as symbols of their preparedness to serve as compassionate caregivers during the college's Wednesday chapel on Aug. 31.

Begun seven years ago, the Senior Ribbon Ceremony is one of three ceremonies in the Department of Nursing. The ceremony is held at the beginning of the fall semester to recognize the accomplishments of the students moving into the senior nursing courses. During the ceremony, students are reminded of the guiding principles of Nursing at Newberry College, including the importance of diversity within client systems and populations, the health-illness continuum across the lifespan, holistic nursing care using the Neuman Systems Model, evidence-based practice, and professionalism. Senior students are presented with white ribbons to attach to the sleeves of their Newberry scrubs as an indication to all that they have progressed to the senior year. Higgins plans to graduate in May 2017.
