2015 Feb 16

Twenty-five nursing students enrolled in the Nursing program at Newberry College were recognized at the annual Ribbon Ceremony held in their honor during the fall 2014 semester.

Alexis Fay of Johnston, SC was one of the 25 seniors who were recognized for successfully completing the first year of the Nursing Program and received a ribbon to celebrate their achievements as they embark on year two of their degree program

"The purpose of the ribbon ceremony is two-fold," said Dr. Betsy McDowell, chair of the nursing program at Newberry College. "First is to celebrate students' accomplishments as they complete their first year and the start of their final year. Second is to emphasize the program's core principles of the acquiring a strong knowledge base, strong nursing principles and applied learning."

Nursing majors at Newberry College complete a four-year degree program. They complete a core liberal arts program with an emphasis in science after which they may apply for admission to the major at the end of their sophomore year. Students admitted to the highly selective program begin a two-year nursing curriculum. In the junior year, they begin a rigorous program focused on building their knowledge base. The senior year is dedicated to skill development in a Clinical setting in which they apply classroom learning in a hands-on setting.

The nursing program at Newberry College is accredited by the South Carolina State Board of Nursing. The baccalaureate program at Newberry College is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
